“BE STILL”
Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. —Psalms 4:4:
Sometimes we are too big of a rush to act. We are too impatient to wait on God. We need to learn to let God work out our situation, and quit trying to figure it all out ourselves. As Naomi told Ruth, “Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall” (Ruth 3:18).
A young man had lost his job and didn’t know which way to turn. So he went to see his pastor. Pacing about the preacher’s study, the young man complained about his problem. Finally he said, “I’ve begged God to say something to help me, preacher, why doesn’t God answer?”
The pastor, who sat across the room, said something so softly it was hardly distinguishable. The young man said, “What did you say?” The preacher repeated himself, but again in a tone as soft as a whisper. So the young man moved closer until he was leaning on the preacher’s chair. “Sorry,” he said. “I still didn’t hear you.” The pastor motioned to him to come closer. With their heads bent together, the old preacher whispered in his ear. “God sometimes speaks in a still small voice, so we must move closer to hear Him speak.”
Our problem is we’re too busy to “be still” to listen to what God is saying. We need to turn off our TV, radio, and our iPod, take the ear buds out of our ears, get real close to the Lord, and be quiet. Then listen and let Him speak to us in His still small voice (1 Kings 19:12).
