HANDS OF LOVE
Luke 24:36-40 (text v. 36—Behold my hands…)
A person’s hands will reveal much about him.
- Finger prints reveal a person’s identity (Job 37:7— He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.).
- A person’s handwriting may reveal some things about them.
- Hands are used more than any other part of the body. (I know some will say it’s the tongue, and for many, that may be true.)
The hands of Jesus are mentioned 38 times in the Gospels (Mt. 8:3, 15; 9:18, 25; 12:49; 14:31; 19:13, 15; 20:21, 23; 25:33, 34, 41; 27:29; Mk. 1:31, 41; 5:23, 41; 6:2, 5; 7:32; 8:23 25; 9:27; 10:16, 37, 40; Luke 8:54; 13:13; 24:39, 40, 50; John 3:35; 10:28; 13:3; 20:20, 25, 27).
In our text we find the disciples distraught, discouraged, and disconcerted after Christ’s death (Luke 24:36-40). Jesus appears to them and they are TERRIFIED and AFRIGHTED thinking they are seeing a ghost (v. 37)! Jesus calmed their fears with three words—“Behold my hands…”
Have you ever felt like these disciples—doubting… discouraged… fear- ful… filled with anxious thoughts? It is during those times we all need a fresh glimpse of the Lord Jesus — who He is, and what He has done for you. His hands tell the whole story!
In John 20:19-20, we have another account of this event— “…Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.”
What was it about seeing His hands that made them glad? They were glad for the same reason you’ll be glad when you realize the significance of His hands.
