Do-It-Yourself Repairs
No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. —Matthew 9:16
I read this week about a British woman who tried to even out a chipped rim on an old Chinese vase by hitting it with a hammer. She later discovered that the vase was from a Qing Dynasty, and that her “do-it-yourself” repair had reduced the value of the vase by $326,000. (The Week, April 22, 2011, p. 6). This woman made a costly mistake by taking matters into her own hands. She should have turned the vase over to an expert.
There are times when well-meaning Christians try to “fix” something on their own, and only end up making matters worse. In the parable of the “wheat and tares” the servants asked if they should uproot the tares. The householder told them, “Nay, lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them” (Mt. 13:29). Their attempt to fix the situation would only make things worse.
Is there a “chipped vase” in your life? Why not turn your “chipped situation” over to the Expert, the Lord Jesus Christ and allow Him to fix it?
