Unthankful

Unthankful

In the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful —2 Tim. 3:2

Our devotional text today says ingratitude is “a sign of the times.”  I observed it while shopping at Costco last week as several children were gathered around a lady food sampler. I watched in line as these kids would snatch up samples as fast as they were put on the food tray.  A bit frustrated, the food sampler said, “Can you say, ‘Thank-you?’”  After the children finally cleared out, and I picked up a sample, smiled, and said, “Thank-you.”  The food sampler smiled back saying, “Why can’t kids say ‘thank you’ anymore.” “Because they haven’t been taught,” I answered.

Unfortunately, we have a generation of ingrates because they’ve never been taught how to say “Please” and “Thank-you.”  Being thankful is a virtue that no one is born with. Saying “thank-you” must be taught from childhood because people are naturally selfish. According to Romans 1:21, one the main characteristics of the natural man is “when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful…”(Rom. 1:21).

If you are a parent (or grandparent), do your best to instill an attitude of gratitude in your family.

  1. Thanks Preacher for a good devotion. I work at a public school and most of the class has wonderful manners. But that is because the parents are so supportive.
