Our Debt
For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: —Luke 12:48
Christ’s exhortation in this verse is usually applied to issues of giving money, or the abundance of opportunities availed to us. This is all true. However, Christ is also teaching a principle that goes beyond matters of receiving and giving money and taking advantage of the opportunities we have.
For example: How much has God loved you? How much mercy has God given to you? How much of God’s grace has been extended to you? How much has God forgiven you? How many blessings has God poured out upon you?
Therefore, to the same extent God has loved you… been merciful to you… shown grace to you… forgiven you… and blessed you, you and I must also give to others!
In the light of how much God has freely given to you and I, our debt to others is infinite! No wonder Paul confessed, “I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.”
Are you paying your debt to others? To whom much is given, much shall be required!
