The Word Made Flesh
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…” — John 1:1, 14
I think it was Lester Roloff who said, “The Bible is Jesus Christ in written form.” John 1:14 says the Word of God became a baby. Everything you can say about the incarnate Word could also be said about the inspired Word.
The Scripture often attributes characteristics of personality to the Word of God (Gen. 3:8; Heb. 4:12-13; Gal. 3:8). Consider the following parallels of God’s written Word with the incarnate Word, the Lord Jesus Christ:
- Jesus Christ is eternal (John 8:58)—The Bible is eternal (Isa. 40:8; Mt 24:35).
- Jesus Christ is God’s communication to man (John 1:18)—The Bible is God’s communication to man (Heb. 1:1-2).
- Jesus Christ is life (John 1:4; 14:6)—The Bible is alive (John 6:63; Heb. 4:12).
- Jesus Christ is Truth (John 14:6)—The Bible is true. (Ps. 119:160; John 17:17)
- Jesus Christ is powerful (Col. 1:16)—The Bible is powerful. (Jer. 23:29; Heb. 4:12
- Jesus Christ is perfect (John 8:46; 19:4, 6)—The Bible is perfect (Ps 19:7)
- Jesus Christ is light (John 1:9)— The Bible is light (Ps. 119:105, 130)
- Jesus Christ is despised by many (Isa. 53:3)—The Bible is despised (Num. 15:31)
- Jesus Christ is loved by many (John 21:15-17; 1 Cor. 16:22) — The Bible is loved (Ps. 119:140).
- Jesus Christ doesn’t change (Heb. 13:8)—The Bible doesn’t change (Ps. 119:89)
- Jesus Christ saves (Acts 4:12; Heb. 7:25)— The Bible saves (James 1:21; 2 Tim. 3:15).
- Jesus Christ exalted (Phil. 3:9)— The Bible is exalted (Ps. 138:2).
Bottom Line: The Bible you hold in your hands is not just a “book.” It is Jesus Christ “written down on paper!” Treat it as such!

I heard someone say that a Bible that is falling apart (from much use) probably belongs to a Christian who is not falling apart! Some truth to that statement. I also heard Dr. Ruckman once comment: “When you hold a Bible in your hand, that’s the best thing you’ve held all day!”
It always makes me sad or even angry to see the way that some people treat the Word of God. I have seen it tossed, sat upon, stood on, used as a weapon to hit someone in the head. But the saddest of all is the christian was neglects it.
