Fresh Compassions

Fresh Compassions

His compassions fail not: They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” —Lamentations 3:22-23

Just as God provided a fresh batch of manna everyday for the children of Israel in the wilderness, so God gives us a fresh supply of compassion each morning. Like the manna in the wilderness, we must gather a fresh batch of God’s compassion every day. God’s compassions become “stale” when we fail to think on them with each new day. As we arise each morning we must think anew about His mercies. As Jeremiah said, This I RECALL to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.”  Recalling God’s compassions and mercies leads to renewed hope for our day.

When we fail to recount God’s mercies afresh everyday, we become spiritually insensitive and despondent.  God’s compassions are new because He never becomes accustomed to our need. His eye of love never becomes blind to our needs. We may see a thing so often that eventually we never notice it.  God always sees a thing as if He were seeing it for the first time.

Hagar was forced to flee from Sarah into the wilderness. Alone with her new born son, God spoke to her in the wilderness and sustained her. There Hagar “called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God SEEST me(Gen 16:13). The God that saw Hagar’s plight, it the same God that seest your need.

His compassions fail not.” However, our reckoning upon God’s compassions often does fail. God’s compassions must never become so commonplace or as familiar like a building you pass by every day, so you fail to notice them.  Ask the Lord for a daily refreshing of discerning eyes, that you might always have a newly-awakened appreciation of His mercies and compassion.
