Power of Prayer
Power of Prayer
Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. —Jeremiah 33:3
Jeremiah 33:3 has been referred to “God’s Phone Number.” Call on God and He will answer. You never get a busy signal.
In his book, “Shew Thyself A Man,” Eldon Martens tells about an incident that occurred in Eastern Missouri a few years ago. A twelve-car passenger train was carrying hundreds of children on their way to a special Sunday School conference. Suddenly they ran into a severe thunderstorm. As the train rounded a curve, the engineer and fireman saw that the switch just ahead had been left wide open. He jammed on the brakes, but there was no time to stop. Certain disaster faced them. “Derail, stick with it,” he shouted to the fireman. “I intend to,” he replied.
The fireman, who was a Christian, fell to his knees and cried out to God, “Oh, Lord, help us!” His words were almost drowned out by a loud clap of thunder as a bolt of lightning hit right in front of the train. The next thing they knew, they were safely past the danger point. After the train came to a complete stop they walked back to the switch to find out what happened. To their amazement they found that the lightning bolt had struck the rails and closed the switch!
Amen! Prayer changes things! “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).

The word “righteous” means “DO the RIGHT thing”. If you are consistently choosing to do the RIGHT thing, God will know your heart, and others will see your good works and glorify your Father.
Hi Dewey,
Depends on a person’s definition of a “righteous man.” Every Christian is positionally “righteous” IN CHRIST (Rom. 4:5; 5:19; 1 Cor. 1:30; 2 Cor. 5:21). Then there is personal righteousness of a Christian who seeks to live right. While no one is perfect, if we seek to walk in the Spirit and confess our sins, we are cleansed of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
In response to the story about the near derailment of the train, I can predict that those children will never forget the power of prayer of a righteous man. I really enjoy all of your postings. Thank you so much Preacher Al. Alice H
Preacher,
The difficulty with James 5:16 seems to me to be that I am not a righteous man and have no clue about becoming one. Brother Dewey
