New Treasures out of Old Treasures
New Treasures out of Old Treasures
Every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. —Matthew 13:52
Jesus spoke these words after giving the parables on the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. We may make a spiritual application to us today to are instructed in the Word of God.
We are “householders” of a precious treasure—the Word of God (1 Sam. 3:1). It is likened to gold (Ps. 12:6-7). As we are diligent in our study of God’s Word the Holy Spirit will often uncover a gold nugget of truth we have never seen before. Or, He will take an old truth we’ve already seen and use it as a “launching pad” into a new application of that truth.
We are like the householder who “bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.” The new springs forth out of the old and helps us better understand the old. God gives us new insights into old truths as we compare one part of Scripture with another (1 Cor. 2:13).
Has God shown you anything new from His Word lately? If not, why not trying praying Psalm 119:18 next time before you read God’s Word.
