If I Knew Then What I Know Now…
“…if I knew certainly that evil were determined…” — 1 Sam. 20:9
Most of us have said, “If I knew THEN what I know NOW, I would have done things differently.” The problem with this is, it changes nothing.
David prayed and fasted over his new born son who was in distress. The baby eventually died and David “changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.” When his servants asked him about his change in behavior, David answered, “…now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.” What David was saying was, “I can’t fix the past, but I can fix my present situation. I can’t bring the child back… but there is something I can do… I can go to him.”
I can’t change anything about then, but I can do something about now.
The wisest man who ever lived said, “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done… That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been…” (Eccl. 1:9; 3:15). Solomon was saying, “Your past has become your present… and your present today will become your future.” You are today because of how you lived in your past… Your future will be according to how you act today.
I cannot go back and change my past now— However, I can go forward knowing what I DO know NOW… therefore my tomorrow’s don’t have to be one of regrets.
We must quit beating ourselves up over our past and move ahead in the knowledge we have. Instead of saying, “If I knew then what I know now,” I say, “Knowing what I DO know NOW, I WILL do better.”
Now you know… so there is no excuse for not doing what you should do.
