It’s the Little Things

It’s the Little Things

It’s the Little Things

For who hath despised the day of small things? —Zechariah 4:10

We live in a day when things must be big or supersized to be appreciated.  And while there is nothing inherently wrong with bigness, we must never forget that most things that are large began very small.

A baby in the womb began as a tiny speck. That woman is unaware of the work that has begun within her, but the child gradually grows and develops. Then, in due season, it comes forth and is born.  Likewise, the same is true in God’s work of grace.  It starts in a sinner’s heart. The seed of God’s Word is planted.  When God begins His good work in the believer, it is often unnoticed and unfelt. The work may proceed slowly.  But Paul assures us “that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:6).

A little spark can kindle a great fire. Little foxes spoil the vines. As a tiny mustard seed becomes a mighty tree, so a small amount of faith can accomplish great things. God still often speaks in a “still small voice.” A small cup of water given in Christ’s name will pay eternal dividends.  A little lad with a small lunch was used to feed a great multitude of people. An insignificant town called Bethlehem would bring forth the governor of all the earth.

I recently received a note from a former church member who recently attended one of our special meetings.  I had not seen her and husband in a long time.  When I saw them I shook their hands and gave them a hug.  This dear wife wrote how much that meant:  “You took the time to shake his hand, call is name, and more important to him was the fact that you called him ‘brother.’  I wanted you to know, how much these ‘little’ things mean to people you touch.  God uses you in ways, I’m sure, that you are not aware of.”

Never underestimate the potential in small things. A short note… a pat on the back… a smile… a handshake or hug.   Little is much, when God is in it!
