Obama’s Quip: Dwayne Wickman, a columnist for USA Today, overheard President Obama quip to someone at a White House reception regarding himself speaking at the anniversary of MLK’s speech, “Man, can you believe they have me speaking tomorrow, 50 years to the day of the greatest speech ever given. That’s like following Jesus.” (USA Today, August 28, 2013). [Sorry, Mr. President. Martin Luther King’s speech was far from the greatest speech ever given. Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount was infinitely greater, as well as Paul’s farewell speech to the Ephesians elders in Acts 20. Secondly, to equate Martin Luther King to Jesus almost borders on blasphemy!
