Old Testament “Sunday School”

Old Testament “Sunday School”

The concept of Sunday School is not a new innovation. The roots of Sunday School go all the way back to the Old Testament Law.  Consider Deuteronomy 31:12— “Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:”
Here is a four-fold application of this text to our Sunday School today:

  1. Being PRESENT for Sunday School—“Gather the people together…” Sunday School is only effective to the people who gather to attend.
  2. The PARTICIPANTS of Sunday School:  ADULTS (“… men, and women…”); CHILDREN “…and children…”); OUTSIDERS / unsaved (“…and thy stranger that is within thy gates…”). In other words, Sunday School is for EVERYONE of all ages.
  3. The PURPOSE of Sunday School is “…that they may hear, and that they may learn…”). No one is so knowledgable in the Scriptures that they cannot learn something important in Sunday School they did not know before.
  4. The PRODUCT of Sunday School will be a people who “…fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law.” When Sunday School is done right, people who attend will be better Christians than if they forsook Sunday School.

How important is Sunday School to YOU?  As the little chorus goes: “Everybody ought to go to Sunday School!” (James 4:17)
