“I’m Not Quitting On God…”
“…them that are turned back from the Lord…” — Zephaniah 1:6
I had conversation with one of our church members who I hand’t seen at church for a several weeks. He tried to excuse himself saying, “I know I haven’t been coming to church or tithing, but I haven’t quit on God.” I asked him, “Have you been reading your Bible and praying?” He hung his head and said, “Well, no… not really.” I asked, “What about witnessing? Have you been telling others about Jesus?” “No, I haven’t… But don’t worry preacher… I haven’t given up on the Lord!” he said proudly. I looked him in the eye and asked, “Well, if you ever do give up on the Lord, what will be different from what you’re doing (or not doing) now? You’re not faithful attending church, not tithing, not praying, not reading your Bible, not witnessing. What’s left? What will be different if you ever do quit on God?” He didn’t have an answer. The truth is, he had quit on God long before he quit coming to church and quit reading his Bible.
What’s really sad is this person could not see his true spiritual condition. He was self-deceived and actually thought He was still walking with God. As it was with Samson, “he wist not that the LORD was departed from him” (Judges 16:20).
Don’t fool yourself. “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” (1 Cor. 10:12).
