Stand Up For Jesus

“Stand fast in the faith…” —1 Corinthians 16:13

There is something to be said of those who will “stand up” for what they believe. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego took a stand when commanded to bow before Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image (Dan. 3). Mordecai also took a stand when commanded to bow before Haman (Esther 3).

While I pastored in Vermont, I had the opportunity to attend a town meeting.  Here I witnessed democracy  in it’s purest form. Every citizen gets to have their say on whatever issue is being discussed.

It was at such a town meeting held in Strafford, Vermont where the expression “stand up and be counted” originated.   After debating paying the sum of $582.50 for outside health services the moderator finally said, “I’m going to call for a standing vote. All those in favor stand up and be counted.”  By standing they were agreeing to make the payment.

To stand up and be counted is both pure democracy and pure commitment.  Stand up and be counted as a follower of Jesus Christ.

God asks, “Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will STAND UP for me against the workers of iniquity?” (Ps. 94:16).
