The Work of the Word
“For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men but as it is in truth, the word of God which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” —1 Thessalonians 2:13
The Bible works! It is effectual! No other book ever written has had the profound effect on this world as the Bible has.
Some one has noted the thing that determines great literature is it “changes you. When you are done reading, you’re a different person.” Since that is true, the Bible must be the greatest piece of literature in the world since it has literally changed countless lives.
The Bible challenges us to live better… It calms us when we are afraid… It cheers us when we are sad… It comforts us when we are down (1 Thess. 4:18). It convicts us when we are wrong (Ezra 9:4)… It cautions us about what is harmful… It cleans us when we are dirty (Ps. 119:9; John 15:3)… It converts our soul to the Lord Jesus Christ (Ps. 19:7).
Hebrews 4:12 says “the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Notice God’s Word is ALIVE (“quick”)… POWERFUL… SHARP… PIERCING… DIVIDING… and DISCERNING! There is no other book in the world that can do these things!
The only way to allow God’s Word to work in your life is to (1) READ it and (2) BELIEVE it!
