DON’T WORRY!
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. —Philippians 4:6
The word “CAREFUL” in our text verse means “FULL OF CARE,” or worrisome and anxious. At our church we often sing the little chorus, “Why worry when you can pray.” The way some people live, they should sing, “Why pray when you can worry.”
The root word for worry is to choke or strangle. Jesus said when we are full of care that we “choke the Word” within us; and it “becomes unfruitful.” Worry can neither prevent nor solve our problems. It’s futile, it drains us of our entire spiritual and emotional energy. Most worry is beyond our control, and it’s very frustrating trying to control the uncontrollable.
“Whatsoever is not of faith IS SIN” (Rom. 14:23). Mark it down: Worry is sin! It is the opposite of trusting God. It magnifies our problems over the Lord Jesus Christ. It’s a misplaced focus. Whenever we worry, our focus is centered on us in stead of “Looking unto Jesus.”
Someone has said “ego” means, “Edging God Out.” That is what worry will do every time.
Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, “Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? …for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” In other words: “DON’T WORRY!”
