JOB’S HEEL

JOB’S HEEL

“…thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.” —Job 13:27

Job is a type of Christ is several aspects. It is significant that Job’s “heel” is targeted and marked. The first mention of a “heel” in the Bible is Genesis 3:15. God pronounced judgment upon “the seed” of Satan, the serpent—“I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Christ’s heel was bruised (marked) when He stomped on the devil’s head at Calvary.

Shortly before Christ went to the cross, at the Lord’s Supper, Jesus quoted Psalm 41:9 referring to Judas, “He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me” (John 13:18). Jesus said Judas was “a devil” (John 6:70). He called Judas “the son of perdition” (John 17:12 cf. 2 Thess. 2:3). Satan, working through Judas, was lifting up his heel in an attempt to make a preemptive strike to crush the head of Christ, before Christ could crush his head.

Keep in mind, Job was in a spiritual warfare with Satan who smote him with boils from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet (his heels). Satan is tempting Job to curse God (Job 1:11; 2:5, 9). However, when the conflict is over, Job holds to his integrity (Job 13:15). Job’s heel, although bruised with Satan’s boils, does not succumb to Satan’s devices, and Satan is defeated. Likewise, it is with Christ! Praise God!
