Helping the Ungodly

Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord? —2 Chronicles 19:2

Jehoshaphat was a compromiser and almost got himself killed because of it. He allowed himself to be persuaded by wicked Ahab to join him in an alliance against the Syrians. They called in the prophets after the decision already had been made in order to get their blessing. We often do the same thing. We make our plans and then ask God to bless them instead of asking God for a plan first. All the prophets on the royal payroll told Ahab what he wanted to hear. They gave a “politically correct” message.

However, Micaiah was the one faithful prophet who stood alone and spoke the truth—This battle to reclaim Remoth-Gilead would end with the death of Ahab. Ahab threw Micaiah in prison and went to war anyway to prove the preacher wrong. He was going to have his way, and he died having it.

By God’s grace, Jehoshaphat survived the ordeal. Upon returning home, Jehu reproved him—“Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord?” God never wants His people teaming up with the ungodly in their ventures. There can be no concord between Christ and Belial. All such alliances will end in disaster.
