Without Guile
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! —John 1:47
When Philip told Nathanael they found the Messiah—Jesus of Nazareth, Nathanael plainly spoke his mind, “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?” (John 1:46). His comment was a slam not only upon Nazareth, but Jesus, who came from there. What a sarcastic thing to say, but totally honest. Of course, Jesus knew what Nathanael said (John 2:24-25). When Jesus saw Nathanael coming, Jesus greets him, “Behold an Israelite, in whom is no guile.” Guile is use of deceit, a ruse, disguise. Jesus was paying Nathanael a compliment for being so honest and transparent.
There is a lady in our church who is so blatantly open and candid about herself, it often gives us a good laugh. In a world where most people are trying to cover up their mistakes, she is a breathe of fresh air. She is completely without guile. With her, what you see is what you get.
May we all be so transparent in how we live.
