“Faithful Unto Death”

Be thou faithful unto death… — Rev. 2:10

When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, it buried the city of Pompeii and it’s population under volcanic ash. Remains of victims have been discovered in the ruins in various kinds of conditions. Some were found huddling in houses while others running to escape.

Excavations of Pompeii found the remains of a Roman sentry in full armor standing at his post at the Herculean Gate. Scattered on the ground were coins and other valuables, while people tried to save themselves and their possessions from the debris. Despite this and his obvious trepidation, the soldier remained faithful unto death as the city was buried around him.

My prayer is: “O Lord, when I die, may death find me being faithful, doing what You’ve called me to do. I may not be very good at the post where You’ve stationed me, but give me the grace to stay there, faithful unto death.”

“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” —1 Cor. 4:2

  1. We should be like Christ; henc, faithful unto death. We read in Philippians 2 that He was faithful unto death even the death of the cross. Hallejuah! What a Saviour! Let us be faithful in the post to which we have been assigned. Through this faithfulness, we can honor and glorify the name of Jesus, who loved us and gave Himself for us.
