FISHING LESSONS
“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” — Matthew 4:19
Peter, James, John were all fishermen by trade before Jesus called them to be His disciples. They knew how to catch fish.
Yet, after a night of not catching a single fish, Jesus taught these “professionals” some new fishing lessons in Luke 5:4-11 (please read).
Peter demonstrated several characteristics needed to be a “fisher of men:”
- Peter was faithful in little things: He was washing nets (v. 2).
- He was admitted his failure: “We have toiled all night, and have taken nothing” (v. 5).
- He followed Jesus’ instructions: “Master… at thy word I will let down the net” (v. 5).
- Peter focused on his own need: “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord” (v. 8).
- Peter fully surrendered to Christ: He “forsook all, and followed him” (v. 11).
Have you caught any fish lately? If not, learn from Peter’s example. He caught about 3,000 “fish” on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41). Not a bad!
