GEARS OF LIFE
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with WINGS as eagles; they shall RUN, and mot be weary; and they shall WALK, and not faith.”—Isaiah 40:31
My first bike was a Schwinn Mark IV Jaguar. As a teenager, I loved riding around the streets of Wayne, Michigan with streamers on the handlebar grips and baseball cards clipped on the fenders with clothes pins. It made an amazing sound as the spokes hit the cards! This bike was also equipped with three-speed gears. I could switch gears to make it easier to peddle on hills.
God also provides three gears for our spiritual life. These three gears are described in Isaiah 40:31. First, there is the WING “gear” to fly with. This “gear” is used for those times in life when we are confronted with some extraordinary task or trial. God will provide exceptional power to “mount up” over these difficult occurrences that may come our way.
Second, there is a “gear” to RUN. Not as strenuous as flying, but still requires more effort to get through some hard situations. God will give us strength to RUN without becoming weary in well doing.
Finally, there is a “gear” for WALKING. This “gear” is used for everyday tasks heel to toe… heel to toe—day-to-day routines of prayer, Bible study, and witnessing. The step-by-step walking in the Spirit. Sometimes the humdrum of life can become tedious and tiring. We may be tempted to quit. It is during this time God enables us to “WALK, and not faint.”
For every kind of experience we face on the roadway of life, God provides us with a threefold strength to meet it. What “gear” do you need for today? Wait on the Lord and He will provide it!
