Know Who You Are Talking To

“O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is God…” —Psalm 95:6-7

The way we speak to people will depend on understanding who the person is we are speaking to. I’m sure I wouldn’t talk to the President of the United States in the same way I speak to my best friend or next door neighbor.

I heard about a man who was hired as a trainee for a big corporation. On his first day he dialed the kitchen for some coffee, but he misdialed and got the president of the company by mistake. Not knowing he was talking to the president, he ordered, “Send me up a cup of coffee.”

The president answered, “Do you know who are talking to?”

“No,” said the trainee.

“You dummy, I’m the president, and I don’t deliver coffee!”

The trainee said, “Well, do you know who you are talking to, stupid?”

“No,” answered the president.

“Good!” and the trainee quickly hung up the phone.

The lesson is: You better know who you are talking to before you open your mouth. The same is true about approaching God in prayer. Know who you are talking to. “Be still, and know that I am God!” (Ps. 46:10).
