My take on Mackinaw Island
We went to Mackinaw Island today. I was there as a ten year old girl and wanted to relive the island as an adult. I don’t know whether Al had ever been there before.
I LOVE architecture and houses, especially, and this island oozes of unique houses. My phone battery was running low already when we reached the island, so I had to be choosy what photos I captured.
GRAND HOTEL
Of course, the BIG DEAL on the island is the world famous Grand Hotel. I was enthralled with the gardens below the entrance. They now charge ten dollars to walk onto the property if you are not a paying guest… (not interested. Thanks.)
TRANSPORTATION
Much of the island is a National Park, and NO MOTORIZED vehicles are allowed (except airplanes, emergency vehicles and winter snow mobiles.) This alone is a unique feature to experience! Bikes and horse drawn carriages are the main modes of transportation. Imagine streets without delivery vans… horse drawn drays were there instead!!
So your transport is either bike, walk, or a horse drawn buggy or taxi. I would have preferred to ride a buggy and horse but we walked six miles instead. Still, it was a unique place to get your steps in!
EXPERIENCES
The village is filled with quaint shops and unique products and FUDGE (I remember the fudge!). Many stores (and even duplicates of the stores) sell fudge. Ice cream is a big feature too. And BIKES… bikes were everywhere! We considered taking our bikes, but decided to get a buggy for the dog instead. (He has health issues. We were amazed how well he took to the carriage. See Al’s post for photo.)
I hope we get to return! I imagine what it would be like to spend a summer there working and living the island life! Hey, a girl can dream!

That’s the hotel from the movie Somewhere in Time! Very cool! Too bad you couldn’t walk the beautiful gardens. P.S. Do you think you could spare a little of that fudge?
It’s an incredible building. I remember Daddy drove our buggy right past it on the front drive… took a LONG time to pass it.
Hmmm… that’s an idea for consideration for sure! 😉
I love traveling with you and Preacher through your blog. Keep up the great work. We love you, miss you, and keep praying for you guys.
I like your blog. Very nice photos. Thanks for keeping us updated on your progress.
Thanks, Jer. We are resting up a bit before heading south. We are worn out from yesterday, so we shortened our trip south. More rest coming in the next few days.
