Our Culture of Self
“He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory”—John 7:18
We live in a self-obsessed culture. People love to ramble on constantly about themselves. Exhibit A is “Facebook.” It is chockfull of self-absorbed individuals who feed their ego with “selfies,” and upload videos describing every insignificant detail of what is going on in their lives.
The sad thing is, so many Christians are also caught up this epidemic of self-obsession. God ain’t impressed by anyone’s self-importance and their pre-occupation with what is going on in their little world. God is impressed with His Son. Paul wrote, “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Gal. 6:14). Or, “He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord”(1 Cor. 1:31).
The Lord Jesus Christ is our only “claim to fame!” Apart from Him we are nothing (John 15:5; Ps. 127:1).
