Paul’s Last Request
The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. —2 Timothy 4:13
Paul’s request to Timothy represented everything a person needs physically, intellectually, and spiritually. A CLOKE to warm his body… BOOKS to occupy his mind… PARCHMENTS (Scriptures) to feed his soul.
Clothing is a practical necessity. We need clothes to cover and protect our bodies.
Books are a personal choice. I wonder what books Paul enjoyed. He was well read for he quoted heathen poets (Acts 17:28). Paul exhorted us to “Give attendance to reading” (1 Tim. 4:13). Jerry Falwell used to say, “Leaders are readers.”
Most importantly, the Scriptures are the prioritized essential. Notice, in Paul’s request he emphasizes for Timothy to “ESPECIALLY” bring the parchments. I get the impression Paul wanted those parchment scrolls more than something to comfort his body, or entertain his thoughts. It is only in the Scriptures that you know God and His plan for your life.
As Job said, “I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23:12).
Dress nice… Read good books… But most of all, feast on the Scriptures!
