RETAINING GOD’S WORD

RETAINING GOD’S WORD

Retaining God’s Word

Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. — Deuteronomy 11:18

We are commanded to remember the words of the Lord. But how? It all depends on where you keep it. If it is only retained in the mind, a failing memory may lose it.

The best way to remember God’s Word is to DO IT— “…ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, TO DO THEM…” (Dt. 11:22).  The Word incarnated in your life will not be forgotten.  It will become a part of your own personality. You live it and it will live in you.  You “flesh out the Word” in your daily behavior.

Another way to retain God’s Word is to TEACH IT— Ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up (Dt. 11: 19). Your grasp of the Word of God is increased while you impart it to others. The word that we teach becomes firmly rooted in our own mind.  It is a great law in life that memory best retains what it gives away. A truth that is never shared is never really possessed.

Finally, if we are to remember God’s Word we must ever keep it before our eyes— “…that they may be as frontlets between your eyes… And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates(Dt. 11:18, 20).  A dusty Bible will make for cobwebs in your mind. Pick up your Bible everyday and read… re-read… and rehearse what you’ve read over and over again. Each morning gather it like “fresh manna” to nourish your soul.

Do these things, and you will never forget what God hath said.
