The Mighty God-Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:6
There are 256 different names ascribed to the Lord Jesus Christ in the Bible. Why so many? Because He is infinitely greater than any one name can express.
Last week we looked at the names “Wonderful, Counselor.” “Wonderful” speaks of Christ’s PERSONALITY. Nothing dull or boring about Jesus!!! “Counselor” refers to His PROFESSION—His counsel is always right.
In this message we will consider the names “The Mighty God” and “The Everlasting Father.” Both these titles confirm the deity of Christ. “The Mighty God” denotes His omnipotence. “The Everlasting Father” refers to His eternalness. Both attributes of God. He is the “I Am” (John 8:58).
I. “The Mighty God”– Speaks of His POWER.
The common name for God in Hebrew is “El-ohim.” The two letters “El” convey the idea of MIGHT and POWER.
A. He is mighty in ESSENCE.
1. He has INHERENT might. Jesus did not acquire might. He has always been mighty. Might is resident in His person.
Everything else in creation gets it’s strength from another source—Angels get their power from God. Animals get their strength from God. Man gets his strength from God (Acts 17:25). But Jesus needs nothing to make Him mighty. He is mighty in and by Himself.
2. He has INSTINCTIVE might. It is His nature to be mighty. Just as “God is love”—He loves because He is love. Just as “God is light”—He gives light because He is light. Just as “God is holy”—He is holy because He is holy. Likewise, “God is mighty” because that is who He is.
B. He is mighty in EXPERIENCE.
God’s might is often connected with warfare in the Bible. Isaiah 42:13—The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man…he shall prevail against his enemies. Psalm 24:8—Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
1. He is mighty in PAST experience. Jesus conquered the devil at Calvary (Col. 2:14-15). Satan is no match for Jesus!
2. He is mighty in PRESENT experience. His might may be experienced in the battles we face in life. …we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (Rom. 8:37)
Thanks be to God, which giveth [present tense] us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor. 15:57) Thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ. (2 Cor. 2:14).
The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds. (2 Cor. 10:4)
a) Some Christians have “amusement park” religion. They are riding a spiritual roller-coaster all the time. On minute they soar to spiritual heights, but then they zoom down into a spiritual abyss.
b) We don’t fight against Satan in our might. We put on the whole armor of God and we’re “strong in the Lord, and the power of HIS MIGHT.” There is VICTORY IN JESUS now (1 John 5:4).
C. He is mighty in EXCELLENCE.
1. The PREEMINENCE of His might. He is The ONE and ONLY mighty God. All other “gods” are powerless.
God doesn’t want second place, OR first place in your life. He wants ALL THE PLACES in our lives. He doesn’t play third, second, or first fiddle. He plays them ALL.
2. The PREDOMINANCE of His might. God(“Elohim”)—The mighty One + the descriptive adjective “mighty” (Heb. gibbôr) making God DOUBLY mighty—He is the STRONG, STRONG God. He is the POWERFUL, POWERFUL God. He is the MIGHTY, MIGHTY God! The ALMIGHTY.
3. The PREVALENCE of His might. He is mighty EVERYWHERE and in EVERY SITUATION.
He is mighty to SAVE anyone who calls upon His name.
He is mighty to SUSTAIN and keep you.
He is mighty to SOLVE any problem you face in life.
“But you don’t know what I’m going through. You don’t know the difficult circumstances I’m facing.” You’re right, I don’t know your problem, but “I know your God!” (Song by Down East Boys).
II. “The Everlasting Father”
Speaks of His PARENTHOOD.
