Weeping of Jesus

Weeping of Jesus

The Tears of Jesus

John 11:35; Luke 19:41; Heb. 5:7 cf. Luke 22:44-46

Our text is the shortest verse in the Bible, yet one of the most profound. No preacher could ever fully exhaust the truth of these two words.

I have seen babies cry… children cry… teenagers, middle-aged, and the elderly cry.

I have seen tender-hearted people weep… political leaders and businessmen weep—I have seen strong, tough, guys weep…

But when I consider the God who created the universe with tears in His eyes, it is marvelous and fascinating.

No where in the Bible does it speak of angels, cherubim, seraphim or any other creature weeping. Weeping is peculiar to mankind.

Before the incarnation, God never experienced what it was like to shed a tear. But, when Jesus felt tears flowing from His eyes down His holy cheeks He experienced something He never felt in eternity.

Tears on Jesus' eyesGod took upon Himself human flesh so He could be touched with the feelings of our griefs and sorrows (Heb. 4:14-16).

Jesus thirsted… hungered… got physically tired… became angry… rejoiced… and He wept, just like you and I.

  • The Bible records three occasions when Jesus wept. Each happened towards the end of Christ’s earthly ministry—At a grave; over a city; and in a garden.

I.  Tears of SYMPATHY at a grave (John 11:35).

  • Why was Jesus weeping? He was not weeping for Lazarus. He knew Lazarus would soon be alive again—That was why Jesus came to Bethany.

A. The PROVOKING of tears (v. 33). Jesus was provoked to tears by the weeping Mary, Martha, and those with them.

1. We should weep with them that weep (Rom.12:15).

2. Jesus cares about our losses, pains, and hurts.

B. The PENALTY of sin.

  • Jesus wept because “in the beginning”, graves were not meant to be. Graves came after the fall. Lazarus was in the grave because of the entrance of sin in the world (Rom. 5:12).
  1. Behind every gravestone is the mark of sin (Rom.6:23). Graveyards are the result of man’s sin.

II. Tears of SORROW over a city (Luke 19:41-44 cf. 13:34-35).

A.  The CONDITION of the city (vs.43-44).

  1.  Christ saw Jerusalem with different eyes than when a man sees a city.
  2.  Men are impressed by a city’s buildings (E.M.P.; Space Needle) and stadiums (Safeco; Century Link). But Christ sees the character of cities reflected in it’s people, and He weeps.
