Tired of God???
Thou hast been weary of me!” —Isaiah 43:22
Can you imagine God’s people getting tired of God? Evidence of growing weary of God is given in the following verses of Isaiah 43t: Prayerlessness (v. 22)… withholding offerings (v. 23)… dishonoring God with unacceptable sacrifices (v. 23 cf. Mal. 1:6-8)… becoming stingy with money (v. 24)… giving God less than the best (v. 24).
Israel was “fed up” with God. Worship had become mechanical and tedious. The things of God became monotonous and wearisome (Mal. 3:14). In contrast to all God has done for Israel (vs. 3-4, 14, 18), Israel did nothing for God, except weary and taunt Him with their sins.
While Israel was weary of God, God was “weary” of their sins—“…thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, though has wearied me with thine iniquities” (v. 24b). God is being sarcastic. God is saying, “Instead of you serving Me, you have made Me to serve you in spite of your sins and iniquities.” (cf. 1:14; 7:13; Jer. 15:6).
Before we get too hard on Israel, Christians can also grow weary of God (Gal. 6:9; 2 Thess. 3:13). I’ve noticed some who call themselves Christians get tired of attending church… preaching… praying… studying the Bible… giving offerings… visitation… service, etc. (Phil. 2:14). Serving God should be a delight, not a drudgery! (Ps. 100:2; Dt. 28:47).
You probably are not tired of God since you are reading this devotion. But beware, lest you become weary and faint in your minds (Heb. 12:3).
