Days of Noah and Lot

Days of Noah and Lot

As the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be… —Matthew 24:37

Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot… —Luke 17:28

Jesus said the days prior to His coming would be like the days of Noah and the days of Lot.  It is true that sin was running rampant during those days as it is today.  But the sin of those days was NOT what Jesus was describing in this text.  He described those days as people “were eating and drinking, marrying and given in marriage” (Mt. 24:38) … “they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded” (Luke 17:28). So what is so unusual about these days that they would point to Christ’s coming? There is nothing particularly sinful about eating, drinking, marriage, buying, selling, gardening, or building. Those are all normal activities that happen every day.

That is exactly the point Jesus was warning about—In the days before His coming people would be living their normal lives as if nothing were about to happen.  They’d enjoy their meals… attend weddings… purchase items… grow gardens… and work construction, as they always did, oblivious that judgment was coming.

The context of the days Jesus described was they “knew NOT until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Mt. 24:39).  They  ignored the warnings and continued to live life as usual. They did nothing to prepare for the Lord’s return. They would be caught unawares!

That is exactly what is happening today!  People live their lives like everything will “continue as they were from the beginning of creation. For this they willingly are ignorant” (2 Pet. 3:4).

If you and I really believe the Lord is coming soon, it should be reflected by an urgency in how we live our lives.  We cannot continue to live like its “business as usual.”  Jesus asked, “When the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8).

Does your life show you expect the Lord to come at any moment? As Jesus said, “Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching (Luke 12:37).  When Jesus comes will He find you watching? (Titus 2:13)
